I’m still up. Let’s do this.
Started off by getting my beauty sleep (I’ll take all I can get). Ran out the door for the 3-6pm musical improv workshop by Eliza Skinner. Marc and I really liked it (Bryan, you really missed out, my friend). We thought she was a good teacher and supportive (and willing to fail; I LOVE that in a teacher). Downside: didn’t seem super-keen on being there (how many times has she taught this class?). Oh, btw, girl got voice game (that’s how you say it in New York, right?). Also, I really liked her lesson plan. Jody, the piano player, was AMAZING. He made us all look good and his playing seemed effortless (which takes a fuckton of work and talent). I really want to bring musical improv to MTL now. Bad idea? Maybe. That has never stopped me before.
Hauled ass to get some food before the 7pm Adsit & Gausas show. Super slow (good thing), great characters, a few hiccups due to occasional crazytown but hugely enjoyable. Then got right back in line for DERRICK. DC Pierson was not available so SNL’s Bobby Moynihan filled in. Great show. Awesome teamwork, listening, playing, characters. Lots of references but the storytelling parts they showed were solid.
Then, boom, over to Urban Stages (one of the venues and the only non-airconditioned one), watch a few sets. Head over to Hudson Guild Theatre, watch a couple sets and then I performed as a member of Team North. Jam shows are tricky. No one knows each other, their styles, rhythms, strengths. It was about as good a show as you’ll get out of 6 people who just met. Weird show but we decided early that rapid edits are a good thing and it served us well.
Then Team North tried to get into the UCB Theatre where free drinks were being served. No luck and a huge crowd inside sent half of us to a bar where we sat, talked shop, swapped improv gossip and generally damaged our livers.
A long ride on the A (which stops at all the locals after midnight) took me to my bed and now I go to join it in a warm embrace. Pics when I recover.
