A Love Letter
Jared had had a long and difficult relationship with the oak tree in the acreage behind his family’s home.
It was where he went to read comic books. It was where he ran to when he first heard his parents were divorcing. It was where he brought his first girlfriend so he could try to explore her body. It was where he slept after a fight with his stepfather. It was where he stayed up late to watch the Perseids. It was where Jared smoked, drank, listened to music, screamed, dreamt, fought, thought about death, wrote, ate, pissed and kissed.
He had climbed its boughs, cut the bark, collected its leaves, bled on the roots, jumped from its limbs, singed it, snapped it, held it.
So it came as no surprise when they cut down his body that Jared chose the oak tree in the acreage behind his family’s home.
