Changes coming in 2012

Montreal Improv’s class structure is about to change and expand. As we’ve grown, we’ve collected a lot of feedback and made our own observations about our classes. We always want to offer the best possible experience and to make our classes as effective and fun as possible. So here’s what’s happening in 2012:

  • Level 1: 4 weeks, 100$
  • Level 2: 6 weeks, 150$
  • Level 3: 8 weeks (7 classes + 1 show), 180$
  • Level 4: 8 weeks (7 classes + 2 shows), 180$

Our levels 1 and 2 are not changing. They are doing their job just fine. Levels 3 and 4 will now get an extra week of classes (and a corresponding price bump). And we’ve also added an extra show to Level 4. Generally, the show(s) will happen the week after the 7th class, making the courses, in essence, an 8 week course. A lot of people have asked for longer courses as they feel the classes end too soon so we hope bumping up the level 3 and 4 classes will help meet this need. We did not bump the lower level classes since we want to keep the prices low and require less time-commitment from people who might want to just try it out.

Additionally, we will also begin regularly offering more advanced classes for our students who have completed Level 4. Up until now, these kinds of classes have been tricky to fill just because of the number of students eligible to register. We feel we’re starting to hit a critical mass of students here in Montreal so you’ll soon be seeing more classes like the following (which is now open for registration, BTW):

  • Longform: La Ronde: 7 weeks + 2 shows, 180$ (La Ronde is a specific format of improv show)

We plan on having several of these during 2012 like:

  • Longform: Narrative
  • Longform: Armando
  • Longform: The Bat
  • Special Topics: Character
  • Special Topics: Genre
  • And others…

These more advanced classes (with the same duration and price) will only be open to students who have completed Level 4 or have similar improv experience.

We will also be adding a second show to some of our Saturday nights in 2012 to accommodate the additional student shows and to make space for the increase in demand for stage time from outside performers. Instead of just an 8pm show on Saturdays, we’ll be moving to a 7pm & 9pm schedule this winter season.

The day when students who have studied with us start getting together and forming their own troupes and booking their own shows at the theatre is not far off. To help this along, expect an announcement about the creation of house teams in early 2012.

We love how this little community is evolving and growing and our job is to nurture that growth and keep the momentum going. Our classes, shows and offerings are a big part of that and it’s something we want to be constantly improving.

To summarize:

  • Increased classes for Levels 3 and 4 (and an additional show for Level 4)
  • New classes (with performances) on offer for those who complete level 4
  • Two shows on Saturdays
  • House teams are coming

If you have any comments or questions about these changes, we’d love to hear them. You can contact us by email (contact@montralimprov.com) or even better, come down to the theatre and chat with one of us (Marc, Bryan, Vinny).

So here’s to the continued evolution of Montreal Improv in 2012. We hope you’ll join us.
