Review: Marc Maron - Scorching the Earth
Last night I went to see my first Zoofest show, Marc Maron - Scorching the Earth at Theatre Ste Catherine. The short review: I really enjoyed it.
It’s a one man show about Maron’s two failed marriages and his own role in the resultant misery. The themes of anger, addiction and self-doubt run through the (roughly) hour long show and are reflected in his inability to maintain a relationship. The show is entertainingly brutal as Maron exposes, with what seems to be humiliating honesty, a series of awful relationship missteps as a series of comedic stories.
As a performer, Marc knows how to hold a crowd’s attention and deliver his material (which veers between self-lacerating comedy and self-lacerating tragedy). He appears to be playing a lightly exaggerated version of himself which works well with the script that cleverly captures a number of moments that have clearly stayed with him.
I have no problem recommending the show but be warned that you might not know whether to pity or laugh at what you’re hearing. Quite often, you’ll be doing both.
